Methodology

Our standard penetration test (SPT) methodology follows ASTM D1586, using a 63.5 kg hammer dropped 0.76 m to drive a split-barrel sampler. In Laramie, we typically advance borings to depths of 10–20 meters, with SPT intervals every 1.5 meters. We record N-values corrected for overburden (N60) and energy efficiency. For cohesive soils, we also sample undisturbed tubes for laboratory testing. Our process includes continuous logging, groundwater monitoring, and coordination with local drillers experienced in Laramie's glacial till conditions. For more details, see our standard penetration test (spt) page.
Reference Technical Parameters

| Typical N60 range | 4–20 blows/0.3 m (cohesive soils); 10–40 blows/0.3 m (granular) |
Local Considerations — Laramie
Laramie's geology poses specific challenges: high groundwater in spring, expansive clays, and seismic site effects. Our team integrates SPT data with local experience to address these. For deeper profiling, we recommend cone penetration test (cpt) for continuous stratigraphy. Our main hub in Denver coordinates regional projects; contact our standard penetration test en Denver office for multi-site investigations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What soil types are common in Laramie, Wyoming?
Laramie's soils are predominantly Quaternary alluvial and glacial deposits, including silty clays, sandy gravels, and claystone. These materials often exhibit variable density and stiffness, requiring careful SPT evaluation.
Is seismic design required for projects in Laramie?
Yes. Laramie is in IBC Seismic Design Category B to C, with a mapped PGA of 0.2g. Site-specific SPT data is used to determine site class and liquefaction potential, especially near the Laramie River.
Are geotechnical investigations mandatory for new buildings in Laramie?
While not always mandated for single-family homes, commercial and multi-story structures require a geotechnical report per IBC Chapter 18. SPT is the standard method for bearing capacity and settlement analysis.
